The half-filled Landau level – composite fermions and dipoles
نویسندگان
چکیده
The composite-fermion approach as formulated in the Fermion Chern-Simons theory has been very successful in describing the physics of the lowest Landau level near Landau level filling factor ν = 1/2. Recent work has emphasized the fact that the true low energy quasiparticles at this filling factors are electrically neutral and carry an electric dipole moment. In a previous work, we discussed at length two formulations in terms of dipolar quasiparticles. Here we briefly review one approach – termed electron-centered quasiparticles – and show how it can be extended from ν = 1/2 to nearby filling factors ν where the low-energy quasiparticles carry both an electric dipole moment and an overall charge e = (2ν − 1)e.

An Unsettled Issue in the Theory of the Half-Filled Landau Level
Whether the half-filled Landau level can be described in terms of a “Fermi liquid” [1] of composite fermions has been controversial. [1–3,?,5,6,8,9] (Hereafter we shall use the phrase “Fermi liquid” in a loose sense. It does not imply, e.g., a finite quasiparticle weight, but simply means that the long wavelength/low energy current-current correlation functions resemble those of a liquid of fer...

The pair distribution function and the static structure factor are computed for composite fermions. Clear and robust evidence for a 2kF structure is seen in a range of filling factors in the vicinity of the half-filled Landau level. Surprisingly, it is found that filled Landau levels of composite fermions, i.e. incompressible FQHE states, bear a stronger resemblance to a Fermi sea than do fille...
متن کاملLogarithmic Temperature Dependence of Conductivity at Half Filled Landau Level.
We study temperature dependence of diagonal conductivity at half filled Landau level by means of the theory of composite fermions in the weakly disordered regime (kF l >> 1). At low temperatures we find the leading log T correction resulting from interference between impurity scattering and gauge interactions of composite fermions. The prefactor appears to be strongly enhanced as compared to th...
متن کاملThe Physical Significance of Singularities in the Chern–simons Fermi Liquid Description of a Partially Filled Landau Level
We analyze the linear response of a half filled Landau level to long wavelength and low frequency driving forces, using Fermi liquid theory for composite fermions. This response is determined by the composite fermions quasi–particle effective mass, m, and quasi–particle Landau interaction function f(θ − θ). Analyzing infra–red divergences of perturbation theory, we get an exact expression for m...
متن کاملMagnetoresistance and Hall Constant of Composite Fermions
We consider both disorder and interaction effects on the magnetoresistance and Hall constant of composite fermions in the vicinity of half filled Landau level. By contrast to the standard case of Coulomb interacting twodimensional electron gas we find logarithmic temperature corrections to the Hall conductivity and the magnetoresistance of composite fermions whereas the Hall constant acquires n...
